This rim sherd of a bowl made in North African was found at the site of the early Christian centre of Iona in Argyll. It was probably imported during the second quarter of the sixth century, during the lifetime of St. Columba, the founder of Iona.

The rim sherd is from a bowl made of African Red slip ware.

During the early sixth century AD, a trading system organised from Byzantium (Istanbul) brought exotic luxury goods into Britain. This bowl was probably imported to a southern English centre such as Tintagel, and subsequently moved up to Scotland.
