Piece of 'verde antico'

This piece of 'verde antico' was found at Balmerino in Fife. It is probably from an object obtained in Italy and taken back to Scotland as a pilgrim's souvenir between 800 and 1250 AD.

Piece of verde-antico from Balmerino, Fife, 800 - 1250 AD

'Verde antico' is a green porphyry floor and wall covering used by Roman and Byzantine rulers in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. Fragments of 'verde antico' tiles were taken away by early Christian pilgrims, as they were regarded as being holy.
