Pitch and toss game

This pitch and toss game from Shetland dates from around 1900.

The game consists of 12 halfpennies and one penknife in a tin.

The children of working-class families relied for play on home-made toys and street games. As the 19th century went on, better-off children had access to an increasing range of toys and books.
