Dress pin or hairpin of bone

This bone pin was found at the hillfort settlement at Broxmouth in East Lothian. It was used as a dress pin or a hairpin sometime between 500 and 300 BC.

The pin has been shaped with a bend to hold fabric or hair. It is polished smooth.

Making things from bone and similar material often called for great skill and care. In particular, objects to do with dress and personal appearance were finely worked, as were pieces meant for display.
