This fragment of a lathe-turned wooden bowl of ash was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It provides evidence of the use of lathes for making bowls and cups between 585 and 630.

Only half of the bowl survives, and it is broken in a number of places. It was originally probably flat-bottomed, with a slightly out-turned rim. It is not decorated, except for a shallow groove on the outside near the rim.

The crannog (lake dwelling) at Buiston produced many well-preserved wooden objects. It was probably the residence of a high status family and its servants.
