Handle (Piece)

This wooden object, of birch, is possibly a tool handle. It was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire and provides evidence of techniques used to decorate wood sometime between 585 and 630.

This flat, roughly triangular object has a slot along its longest edge which may have originally accommodated a scraper blade or similar item. It is decorated on one face with incised and burnt designs, the burning superimposed on the incised decoration.

The crannog (lake dwelling) at Buiston produced many well-preserved wooden objects. It was probably the residence of a high status family and its servants.
