From Buiston Crannog, Ayrshire
This piece of a wooden pile was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was part of the foundations of the crannog, used sometime between 585 and 630.
The marks made by an axe when shaping the pile are clearly visible.
This was one of the many piles used to make the foundation structure for the crannog (lake settlement) at Buiston. The crannog was probably the residence of a high-status family and its servants.
