This iron axehead was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was used for general carpentry sometime between 585 and 630.

The small axehead has a short, squared butt end, and a roughly oval haft hole. The sides are parallel and the blade curves gently. A fragment of the ash-wood haft has been preserved in the hole.

Axes and other carpentry tools were important at the wooden crannog (lake settlement) at Buiston. They were needed for structural work (for example, making piles, floors or walls) and for making artefacts.
