Pin

This wooden dress pin, made from cherry, was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It is a rare survival of a wooden dress pin. The pin was made sometime between 585 and 630.

The long, tapering pin is circular in section. Its head is decorated by two grooves at the top of the shaft. Although dull now, when made the pin would probably have been oiled and polished to show the grain and rich colour of the cherry wood.

The crannog (lake dwelling) at Buiston produced many well-preserved wooden objects. It was probably the residence of a high-status family and its servants.
