This wavy disc of alder, possibly a butter shaper, was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was made sometime between 585 and 630.

The circular object was carved from a plank. Eight 'waves' have been carved with a knife, each radiating from the centre. In the centre, at either side of the object, is a single shallow circular indentation.

The crannog (lake dwelling) at Buiston produced many well-preserved wooden objects. This object may be an unfinished but unusually elaborate dasher (plunger head) for a butter churn, or it could have been used to shape butter or other soft food.
