Leather (Piece)

This piece of leather was found at the site of the early Chritian monastery of Iona in Argyll. The punched decoration is clearly visible, although the original use for the leather is unclear. It dates from between 585 and 618.

The leather has been decorated with a punch producing half-moon and circular marks.

Leather was used for a range of everyday objects such as clothing, shoes, purses, straps and belts, though they rarely survive. Leather was often decorated using simple tools to impress patterns in the leather or by cutting out shapes.
