Shoe Last

Leather shoes were often made or repaired around a wooden last, also known as a former. This wooden last was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It dates from between 585 and 630.

Wooden shoe last from Buiston Crannog, Ayrshire, 585 - 630 AD

Shoes and other leather objects only survive where conditions are favourable. A variety of Roman shoes are known, but few from the centuries following the Roman withdrawal. This find shows the use of wooden lasts in this period.
