Cooking stones
Add to album

These small cooking stones were found during excavations at Cnoc Coig on Oronsay in the Inner Hebrides. They date from between 4500 and 4300 BC.

The stones are natural beach cobbles or pebbles. They show signs of burning and have cracked from contact with cold liquid. They had probably been dropped into an animal skin containing water.

Cooking stones were used throughout prehistory and into the Historic period as a simple device in cooking. They were used in various ways but were always heated first.
