Hand-line winding frame

This wooden object, perhaps the end piece of a frame for winding in a line when fishing from a boat, was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was used between 585 and 630.

The object is a narrow piece of wood, broadening to diamond-shaped ends, with perforations for attaching it to cross-struts.

Line winders were used in boats to keep lines from tangling. Line runners fixed to the sides of boats also prevented tangling and protected the boat's wooden sides from chafing when large fish were hauled in.
