Ploughshare

This iron ploughshare was found at Westness on Rousay in Orkney in a man's grave containing a range of weapons and tools. It was used sometime between 850 and 900.

The ploughshare has a rounded point, which was used to break up the ground when pulled by one or more animals. The flanged back gripped the stock of the plough.

Viking men, especially those coming from a Norwegian home or background, were buried with a wide array of goods. These often included a range of weapons, tools, personal ornaments and feasting equipment.
