This bronze salt cellar head is from the Roman fortress at Inchtuthil near Dunkeld in Perthshire. It dates from between 82 and 87 AD. Fancy utensils for preparing and consuming food belonged to the higher ranks of the Roman army.

The domed lid has a knob on top, and perforations for the salt.

Inchtuthil was a major fortress built as part of Agricula's expansion into northern Scotland.
