Milk jug of Wemyss ware
Add to album

This Wemyss ware milk jug was made between around 1883 and 1930 at Robert Heron & Sons' pottery at Kirkcaldy in Fife. It was part of a breakfast set that also comprised a tray, cup and saucer, sugar bowl and teapot.

The milk jug is hand-painted with a black cockerel on either side and the word 'Bonjour'.

In the 19th century, potteries grew in number to meet the increased demand. The largest firms were near the Forth and Clyde rivers and Kirkcaldy became a major centre for potteries. Robert Heron & Co. were famous for their prestigious Wemyss ware.
