This plaque or works plate is from a railway wagon made by R & Y Pickering of Wishaw near Glasgow, one of the major builders of railway rolling stock in Scotland.

Diamond-shaped locomotive works plate, red, marked `R.Y. PICKERING & Co. LD. / BUILDERS / WISHAW AND GLASGOW`, 19th century

By the late 19th century Scotland was one of the world's major suppliers of railway equipment. Up to 58 companies built locomotives with the main centres of production being Glasgow and Kilmarnock.
