Jug
Add to album

This earthenware jug was found in the River Forth at Gargunnock in Stirlingshire and dates from the 17th century. The jug was produced at Throsk near Stirling.

The jug exterior is lead glazed. There is a band of combed decoration round the shoulders of the jug and a series of grooves around the neck.

By the early 17th century several families were involved in producing pottery, tiles and bricks in the Throsk area, combining this with farming. They took advantage of local supplies, using clay for their products and local peat and coal for fuel.
