This 18ct gold watch was used by the arctic explorer, Dr John Rae on all his voyages. Made in London, the watch dates from 1840-1.

The watch is suspended from an 18ct gold chain.

Dr John Rae (1813-93) was one of many Scots who explored the Arctic. He is particularly remembered for his role in the search for Sir John Franklin's missing expedition of 1848-9, as well as unique polar survey and exploration work.
