Sewing kit, owned by Dr John Rae
Add to album

This sewing kit was used by Dr John Rae (1813-93) to make and mend clothes in the Arctic. It was given to him by Miss Eleanor Franklin, daughter of Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, who went missing with his expedition in 1845.

The kit is covered in black leather and includes scissors, a thimble, needles and buttons.

Dr John Rae was one of many Scots who explored the Arctic. He is particularly remembered for his role in the search for Sir John Franklin's missing team, as well as unique polar survey and exploration work.
