This leather-bound volume of William Shakespeare's plays was taken to the Arctic in 1846 by Dr John Rae (1813-93), and accompanied him all through his Arctic journeys. The book was published in London in 1833.

Dr John Rae was one of many Scots who explored the Arctic. He is particularly remembered for his role in the search for Sir John Franklin's missing team, as well as unique polar survey and exploration work.
