Magnet

This brass-bound steel magnet was made around 1855, probably by John Kidd, a nautical instrument maker based in Dundee.

The five-leaf magnet is bound by two brass straps, at the top and around base. The base strap is stamped `J. KIDD DUNDEE'.

John Kidd was in business between 1853 and 1856 at 6 East Dock Street in Dundee. Although he was identified as a nautical instrument maker, this piece demonstrates that he could also produce `philosophical' apparatus, when required.
