Silver paten

This silver paten was used by Father Henry Forsyth, a 'missionary or heather priest' among the Gaelic-speaking Catholic community around Upper Deeside and Braemar in Aberdeenshire. It was made by Zacharius Mellinus in Edinburgh in 1688.

The paten is decorated with a cross and the letters 'I H S' - the first three letters of the name 'Jesus' in Latin, and a common Christian emblem. Scratched around the rim is 'S.H. IMP. ORA PRO BENEF. VIV. ET. DEFUNCTIS 24 JUNII. A.D. 1688. H.F.S.I'.

Father Henry Forsyth was active in the Upper Deeside and Braemar areas until his death in 1708.
