Silver chalice

This silver chalice was used by Father Henry Forsyth, a 'missionary or heather priest' among the Gaelic-speaking Catholic community around Upper Deeside and Braemar in Aberdeenshire. It was made by Zacharius Mellinus in Edinburgh in 1688.

The chalice's small, plain bowl sits on a broad baluster stem between two flat collars, over a trumpet and decorated cushion base. The initials 'H.F.' are scratched under the base.

Father Henry Forsyth was active in the Upper Deeside and Braemar areas until his death in 1708.
