Gold cup associated with Mary, Queen of Scots
Add to album

Originally a drinking vessel, this gold cup was supposedly given to St John's Kirk in Perth by Mary, Queen of Scots. The cup was made in Germany by Christopher Lindenburger in the second half of the 16th century.

The body of the cup bears the inscription 'For the Kirk of Perth'. This was probably engraved by a Dundee goldsmith called Robert Gairdyne, whilst he was remodelling the lid around 1640.

By 1632, the cup was in the possession of St John's Kirk, where it was used for communion. The cup is now part of the collections of Perth Museum & Art Gallery, Perth & Kinross Council.
