Cradle of the young James VI and I

This wooden cradle may have belonged to Annabella Drummond, Countess of Mar. The countess had charge of James VI (1566-1625) from his infancy until he was 11 years old and the cradle is said to have held the infant king.

The cradle has two rockers, four small pillars at each corner, and a semicircular head-piece. The side panels are inlaid with marquetry geometric designs associated with the family of Mar.

James grew up in Stirling Castle, where he was treated with 'unloving severity' by the Countess of Mar.
