Badge of the Order of Baronets of Nova Scotia
Add to album

This distinctive badge was worn round the neck by hereditary knights belonging to the Order of Baronets of Nova Scotia. This example belongs to a family whose baronetcy dates to 1634, but the badge itself was probably made in London around 1780.

The gold and enamel oval badge features the arms of the Order, combining the saltire with the Royal Arms of Scotland, surrounded by its motto.

The Order of Baronets of Nova Scotia was instituted by James VI as a means of raising funds and encouraging Nova Scotia's colonisation. This new hereditary honour could be bought for 2000 merks.
