Memorial plaque, of Protestant Alexander Cockburn of Ormiston

This brass plaque commemorates Protestant Alexander Cockburn (1536-1563) of Ormiston, scholar and pupil of John Knox. It was engraved by James Gray of Edinburgh in 1563. The plaque was previously in the former parish church of Ormiston in East Lothian.

The plaque is typical of the classical Renaissance style. Part of the Latin inscription reads 'Virtue developed thy mind and the Muses thy intelligence with equal success, diligence and wisdom.'

Alexander Cockburn's father, the Laird of Ormiston, had been banished for his support of George Wishart - a Protestant burnt to death in 1546 for his beliefs.
