Heraldic panel

This wooden heraldic panel shows the coat of arms of Lady Margaret Wauchope and her husband John Carre of Cavers in Roxburghshire. It was probably painted for her funeral. It dates from 1709.

The coat of arms is surrounded by those of 16 branches of related families.

The panel is a symbolic bridge between past and present. It represents not just a rite of passage for the deceased but a way of strengthening friendship between the related families.
