Bronze casing for a lead weight

This bronze casing for a heavy lead weight was found at Milsington near Hawick in the Borders. It was used sometime between 80 and 200 AD.

The bowl-like casing has two perforations.

The Roman world had a highly standardised system for weighing goods. Objects were weighed either on a balance from which pans were suspended or on a steelyard. Weights occur in a number of forms, including some of lead, cased in bronze.
