Piece of a gilded bronze statue

This piece of a gilded bronze statue, possibly of an equestrian, was found at Milsington near Hawick in the Borders. It would have formed part of a larger-than-life size statue, perhaps from a shrine. It dates from between 80 and 200 AD.

Only part of the leg and the foot, wearing a Roman sandal, survives.

Sculptures were often placed in Roman temples, though few survive today, due to the believers taking them with them or non-believers destroying them. Surviving examples in Roman Britain include statues of deities and the imperial family.
