Add to album

This oil painting of Orkney and Shetland sheep, painted full size, is by William Shiels. It was painted around 1835.

The ram in the picture is one of an old breed from Eynhallow; the ewe is from Rousay in Orkney; and the lamb is crossed with the Cheviot breed.

The artist, William Shiels. was commissioned by Professor David Low of the Department of Agriculture at Edinburgh University to travel round the British Isles to record all the domesticated breeds of British animals.
