Barometer

This mahogany barometer was made around 1790, probably by William Robb, a clockmaker based in Montrose in Angus.

The angle barometer registers from 28 to 31 inches on the mercury-filled glass tube and has a movable brass index. The scale is signed 'Wm Robb Montrose'.

William Robb apparently came from a property-owning family and is recorded as a long-case clockmaker in Montrose between 1756 and 1808. He appears to have emigrated to America in 1777, but to have returned to Scotland by 1780.
