Medal (obverse), commemorating trial & acquittal of Thomas Hardy

This is the obverse of a 1794 bronze medal commemorating the trial and acquittal of Thomas Hardy, a Scot who had helped to found the London Corresponding Society - a national radical organisation.

The obverse depicts a bust of Hardy surrounded by the text, 'Hardy, Secretary to the London Corresponding Society, Not guilty, Novr 5 1794'.

The French Revolution and the American Declaration of Independence encouraged the spread of radical ideas throughout Britain. Radical societies were formed but the threat they posed was exaggerated by the government.
