Medal celebrating the birth of Prince Charles Edward Stewart

This is the reverse of a bronze medal celebrating the birth of Prince Charles Edward Stewart, an heir for James VIII, the 'Old Pretender', in December 1720. The medal was made by E. Hamerani in Rome.

Bronze medal on the birth of Prince Charles, the Young Pretender, by E. Hamerani, 1720

Medals such as this were an important weapon in the propaganda war waged between the British state and the Jacobites who aimed to put James VIII, the 'Old Pretender' on the throne. Medals were used both to encourage supporters and ridicule opponents.
