Bronze medal (reverse) of James VIII, the Old Pretender
Add to album

This is the reverse of a bronze medal of James 'VIII', the 'Old Pretender'. The medal was probably issued in 1710 to bolster support for James's cause during abortive peace negotiations between Britain and France. It was made by Norbert Roettier.

The reverse has a map of the British Isles, and a Latin motto which translates as 'Restore my kingdom to me'.

In 1708 an attempted Jacobite invasion of Scotland, supported by France, was unable to land. It was seven years before the Jacobites tried again. By this time George I, the Elector of Hanover, had succeeded Queen Anne, who died in 1714.
