Probably made in Glasgow

Surveyors' level
Add to album

This surveyors' level was made around 1840, probably by Andrew Dodd, a scientific instrument maker based in Glasgow. It is made of brass.

The level has a bubble tube over the telescope, and rack-and-pinion focusing. Engraved on the limb is 'Dodd/ GLASGOW'.

In the mid 19th century, there was a growing demand for surveying instruments. They were needed in the growing cities and in the communications - the canals, turnpike roads and, later, railways - that connected them.
