Microscope

This brass microscope (pictured here in its fitted box) dates from around 1845. It was retailed by Gardner & Co., scientific instrument makers based in Glasgow.

The microscope is an early achromatic compound type. When assembled, it is mounted on a pillar. The pillar is signed 'Gardner & Co./ 21 Buchanan St./ Glasgow'.

Gardner & Co. had premises at 21 Buchanan Street from 1839 to 1859, and at 53 Buchanan Street from 1860 to 1882.
