Manuscript notebook, medical case notes for the practice of Andrew St. Clair

This manuscript notebook contains the medical case notes from 1725 to 1732 for the practice of Edinburgh physician, Andrew St. Clair (1697-1760), one of the foundation professors of Edinburgh University's medical school.

Bound in vellum, the notebook gives details of medical consultations and prescriptions, classified by the patient's ailment. There is an alphabetical name index of patients at the beginning, followed by 270 numbered pages.

St Clair's private practice contained many wealthy patients, as can be seen by the list of names down the right hand margin - 'Lady Minto', 'E[arl] of Haddington'.
