Add to album

This barometer was made around 1700, probably by Daniel Quare (1649-1724), a London-based scientific instrument maker and one of the most eminent clock- and watchmakers of his day.

The walnut stem of the instrument has an upper fluted and reeded section and a shorter lower spirally reeded section, ending in a circular bulb base. The instrument is numbered '80' on the side below the scales.

In 1695, Quare was granted the first patent in Europe relating to the barometer construction. The design gave improved portability with an enclosed cistern and a construction at the head of the tube to reduce damage during transport.
