This brass domestic thermometer was made around 1820, probably by Alexander Adie (1775-1858), a scientific instrument maker based in Edinburgh.

The mercury-in-glass thermometer is mounted on a brass plate and graduated in Fahrenheit degrees from 0 to 220, with 'Water/boils at 212 and 'Freezing' at 32. The oak back has a handle-shaped upper portion and there is a brass ring for suspension.
