Analemmatic sundial
Add to album

Analemmatic sundials have two gnomons, a vertical one for a calendrical scale and an inclining one for the normal horizontal hour scale. This brass example was made in 1801, probably by John Engelbrecht of Brunswick in Germany.

The dial has three levelling screws and is inscribed on the edge 'FECIT IOAN ENGLEBRECT BERAUNENSIS/ 1801'.

This type of dial is not fitted with a compass for orientation, but combines two forms of dial, the vertical one being set in accordance with the season. The instrument is then turned until both shadows indicate the same hour.
