Add to album

This chart of the east coast of Scotland was made by Captain Greenville Collins in 1689, with a scale of about 17.5 miles to one inch. It was published, with another 47 charts, in Collins' Great Britain's Coasting Pilot in 1693 by Richard Mount of London.

Collins was appointed by the King (Charles II) in June 1681 to survey the coast of Britain. The survey was hampered by lack of financial support, but was completed in 1688. This work went through 11 further editions, the last in 1792.

Advances in surveying and map production brought greater knowledge of the wider world in the late 16th and 17th century. New techniques also helped Scotland to become one of the best mapped countries of the 17th-century world.
