Piece of a sculptured stone
Add to album

This piece of a sculptured stone is one of several pebbles and stones marked with incised crosses found at St Ninian's Cave in Wigtownshire. The carving was probably made sometime between 500 and 1200.

The simple cross has clearly defined lines at the end of each arm.

Throughout the west of Britain, simple incised crosses are found on slabs, upright pillars, boulders, pebbles and rock faces. The simple forms make them extremely difficult to date, and the practice of marking stones may have been long-lived.
