Add to album

This ceramic pot was found at Allt Cleascro at Achmore on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It was made sometime between 1000 and 500 BC and was probably buried with an offering to the gods.

The pot is complete except for part of the base.

Before Christianity, pots were common offerings to the gods. They may have symbolised food or eating, and were perhaps thought to bring fertility and abundance.
