Eagle's claw, possibly used as an amulet

This eagle's claw was found at the neolithic settlement site of Skara Brae on Orkney. It dates from between 3500 and 2000 BC, and was probably valued as an amulet.

Eagle's claw from Skara Brae, Orkney, 3500 - 2000 BC

Magic and superstition were an integral part of everyday life. Charms and amulets were commonly carried, although sometimes it is difficult to identify them as such or interpret their symbolism.
