Sherd of pottery
Add to album

This sherd of pottery was found at the site of the Neolithic village of Skara Brae in Orkney. It was used sometime between 3100 and 2400 BC.

The thin, hard sherd is from a flat-based pot. It is undecorated.

In Scotland, most pottery-making remained low-tech and small-scale in operation until the medieval period. At first, pottery was made for domestic use only, with most pots made and used locally. Later there was increasing craft specialisation.
