Handle made of jet
Add to album

This jet handle was found at the site of the hillfort of Traprain Law in East Lothian. It is Roman in origin, but dates after the withdrawal of troops, showing continued contacts between Romans and natives in the 5th century.

'Jet' handle from Traprain Law, Late Roman, 410 - 425 AD

During the Roman occupation, Traprain Law was a centre for contact, trade and exchange. Even after the Romans withdrew, they maintained contact with people there, because they acted as a buffer between the frontier and the hostile tribes further north.
