Playing pieces

These glass playing pieces for games were found at the native hillfort settlement of Traprain Law in East Lothian. They are Roman objects, acquired by gift or trade sometime between 80 and 200 AD.

Gaming counter of dark blue glass, from Traprain Law, 80 - 200 AD

The evidence for Roman games in Britain consists mainly of dice and boards for games similar to backgammon and draughts. Playing pieces are generally of bone or pottery sherds, though quality glass counters are also known.
